A George III sterling silver teapot, London 1790 by Peter and Jonathan Bateman (reg. 7th Dec 1790)

Of shaped oval form with bright cut engraved decoration, each side with an oval laurel leaf cartouche one later engraved with dual crests above the motto Tuebor, all surmounted by an Earl’s coronet. The hinged domed lid with bright cut engraved borders, surmounted by a wooden knop finial. A straight tubular spout opposite a curved wooden handle. Fully marked underneath, part-marked to lid.

Length – 28.2 cm / 11 inches

Weight – 431 grams / 13.86 ozt

The crests, motto and coronet are for Byng, as borne by the Earls of Strafford, (third creation 1847)

For a George III teapot of 1770 by William and James Priest, with a stand London 1805 by John Emes, both of which engraved with the stand heraldic devices for the Earls of Strafford, sold these rooms The Andrew Milne collection, June 26th 2019, Lot 127.

Jonathan Bateman died 19th April 1791, thus ending this partnership and the use of this mark on 2nd May 1791 when Peter registered a new mark with his sister Ann. Thus the mark of Peter and Jonathan was only used for the comparatively short period of 147 days or 4 months 26 days.
