A George III sterling silver tankard, London 1784 by John Wakelin & William Taylor (reg. 25th Sep 1776)

Of tapering cylindrical form with three bands of applied coopering. The square section curved handle leading to a hinged lid raised by a pierced shell thumb piece. The top of lid engraved with a coat of arms in a shield shape cartouche below a rosettes and swags. The front of the tankard with engraved initials JM in flourished cursive script. Fully marked underneath and part-marked to lid.

who is probably John Robinson Foulis of Buxton and Heslerton esq (1761-1826) the son of Sir William Foulis (d.1756) of Ingleby manor, York, who married on the 16th of November 1795 Decima-Hester-Beatrix, daughter of Sir Christopher Sykes (1749-1801) second Baronet of Sledmere.
