John has nearly 20 years’ experience in collecting and studying silver, having developed a significant and broad knowledge of British, continental, and non-European silver. His expertise in Anglo-Indian, Burmese, Chinese, Persian, and Iraqi silver is unmatched at auction level, having offered significant collections on these topics, both thoroughly catalogued and beautifully presented.
John’s specific research interests include the use of Britannia standard silver, colonial silver from the British Empire—across Malta, Corfu, Jamaica, the West Indies, and India—as well as the silver of 20th-century Persia. In June 2024, he presented on the silversmiths of Antigua at the Silver Society’s international conference Caribbean Silver in the Colonial Period.
Originally from South Wales, John studied Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmiths and holds an MA from the Royal College of Art. He is keen to contribute to and develop academic texts that expand the history and understanding of obscure areas, such as colonial Jamaican silver and Iraqi niello ware
