Special commission by the late Alexander McQueen comes into the spotlight again

16th April 2019

A Nike Laser Cut Black Clothing Set, which was a one-off collaboration between Nike and the renowned footwear designer Tom Luedecke in 2004, is to be offered for sale in an auction of Designer Handbags and Fashion on Wednesday 15th May, 2019.

These unique pieces were specially commissioned by Alexander Lee McQueen for his 2004 ‘Black’ event, in collaboration with American Express. As well as a catwalk featuring a retrospective of McQueen’s designs, there was a charity auction, in which this collection was purchased by the current owner.

Speaking about the commission, celebrated American footwear designer Tom Luedecke, “Mark Parker, President & CEO of Nike Inc. asked me to work on these, as Nike was just launching lasered leather as part of their high end/premium lifestyle footwear, so it fit in well with my work at the time – which focused on this aspect. The Products were created with Alexander in mind, he was a huge fan of the AirMax Franchise Models from Nike. It is not out of the question to ask for 10K plus for a pair of shoes that are this rare in the Sneaker Market.

American Express launched their Black Card at the event and there were a multitude of Alexander’s peers, collaborators and industry friends.  I was lucky enough to be at the event, see the runway show and attend the party.  It was inspiring to say the least, and one of my favorite moments in my career.”

The set comprises a pair of Air May 90 trainers made in black duchess satin, size 9/Euro 44, in custom black suede box, a black leather Basic Rider jacket and an Epic Backpack all created in Black Traveller suede and lasered with a celtic design. The three-piece set is estimated to fetch £12,000-16,000.

Meg Randell, Head of Designer Handbags & Fashion at Chiswick Auctions, said: “This collaboration is exciting because it is a direct link to McQueen himself and the types of pieces he really admired and was inspired by. There is a growing market for rare Nike pieces and this set it one of the rarest there is, so even without the McQueen connection it is an exciting collection”.
