Claudia Valentin: Why Preloved Designer Handbags Are Worth the Investment

26/04/2019     Chiswick Curates, Handbags & Fashion

We’re delighted to feature luxury handbag expert and television personality Claudia Valentin, known for her role on Channel 4’s Posh Pawn and appearances on The Real Housewives of Cheshire. Ahead of our Designer Handbags & Fashion sale, Claudia shares her passion for handbags, thoughts on the luxury resale market, and her favourite piece from the upcoming auction.

How did your interest in handbags begin?

From a very young age I was fascinated by beautifully crafted handbags. My aunt gave me my first leather handbag in Italy when I was just four years old, I think that’s when it all started. I got my first job in a hair salon at 13, and I would save up to buy designer bags. The thrill of adding to my collection was incredible. Turning that passion into a career was a dream come true.

How has the luxury resale market evolved?

The growth has been remarkable. Buyers are now far more conscious, often purchasing with investment in mind. When Posh Pawn launched, people started to realise they had ‘assets in their closets’. Now, thanks to platforms like Chiswick Auctions and dedicated resale sites like my own, the process of buying and selling designer bags has become far more accessible.

Why should buyers consider preloved designer bags?

Buying preloved is an excellent way to enter the world of designer handbags. It offers the opportunity to acquire rare and exclusive pieces,  and in some cases, even save money. With brands like Hermès, second-hand purchases can bypass the waitlists, and while prices may carry a premium, you’re often investing in a bag that will hold or even increase in value.

What advice would you offer to those looking to follow in your footsteps?

Do your research, be passionate, and never stop learning. The luxury market is always evolving. Be willing to ask questions and stay humble. Most importantly, work hard and treat people with respect, it will take you far.

Hermès Feu Niloticus Crocodile Kelly Pochette.

What’s your favourite item in the 15 May auction?

It has to be the Hermès Kelly Pochette. The vibrant colour is stunning. I’d wear it with a monochrome look — all black or all white — to make it the centre of attention. It's truly a showstopper.
