CIRCLE OF SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (BRISTOL 1769-1830 LONDON)
Portrait of Princess Charlotte (1796-1817)
oil on canvas
29 7/8 x 25 in. (75.9 x 63.5 cm.)

PROVENANCE:
Major Frank Goldsmith (1878-1967), MP, and by descent to the present owner.

After the picture of 1801-2 at Buckingham Palace of the Princess with her mother Queen Caroline. There is another portrait by Lawrence, of the same size as the present in lot, at Windsor Castle.

Goldsmith was a Conservative Party politician who served as a MP. Born in Germany, the Major’s political career came to an end due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. Goldsmith, a friend of Winston Churchill, left Britain to serve in Gallipoli and never returned due to his feelings of betrayal. He settled in Paris subsequently where he became a director of a chain of luxury hotels. During the Second World War he had to flee again, for being Jewish and this painting was amongst his possessions that remained hidden during the war.

Estimate: £1,500-£2,000
