***The writer of this letter was born Lucy Eaton Smith in a wealthy Manhattan family in 1845. She converted to Catholicism in 1865 and subsequently became a Third Order Dominican. A few years later she decided to start a Dominican community in Glens Falls, New York, took the full Dominican habit and took the name Mother Mary Catherine De Ricci of the Sacred Heart. The community moved to Albany in 1887. A separate house, Our Lady of the Star, was founded in 1891. Mother De Ricci died in 1894.
