POWELL, Anthony (1905-2000).  Temporary Kings. London: Heinemann, 1973. 8vo. Half title. EXCEPTIONALLY FINELY BOUND in polished straight-grained teal morocco by Morrell, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering, top edges gilt, dentelles (a few faint scuff marks). FIRST EDITION, IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front free endpaper, “Arnold Goodman from Anthony Powell, 19 November 1974,” with Powell's name scored through on the title and replaced with his signature, and with a presentation leaf, the autograph calligraphy in red and black, inserted at the front, stating, “For Lord Goodman on presenting the Sixteenth Annual W. H. Smith & Son £1,000 Literary Award to Anthony Powell. November 19th 1974.” Books inscribed by the famously reclusive Powell are rare. "Powell was a reluctant signer. I bought this many years ago in a bookshop in Kensington which is now extinct" (H.B.).
