BURGESS, Anthony (1917-93). A Clockwork Orange. London: Heinemann, 1962. 8vo. Half title (some marginal staining, more severe towards the front). Original black cloth gilt, dust-jacket designed by Barry Trengrove with price of 16s unclipped and wide turn-ins, the rear turn-in with advertisements for Burgess's 'Malayan Trilogy' (cloth covers with adhesive tape, the jacket with some offsetting to the turn-ins from adhesive tape). Provenance: Canterbury Public Library (stamps, library pocket and “date due” label mounted at the front). An internally very scruffy ex-library FIRST EDITION of this infamous and influential novel. The first issue dust-jacket is, in contrast, in very good, crisp and bright condition, apart from the faults stated, leading us to suspect it is not original to this particular copy. Modern Library 100 Best Novels 65. "I stopped dangerously on a corner at a mildly scruffy looking secondhand bookshop in New Zealand on the drive from Christchurch to Blenheim. I was amazed to find such an impeccable first edition dustwrapper on this extraordinary book" (H.B.).
