Blade possibly early Edo period.
Mounts 19th Century.
The blade of hira-zukuri with gunome hamon, the nakago signed Soshu ju Masahiro, mounted in a black lacquer saya with shibuichi fittings including a tsuba signed Arashiyama Tsuneyuki, a set of fuchikashira, a pair of menuki, all with ‘birds’ design, the habaki engraved with a gibbon signed Yoshimune, with a red silk storage bag, 61cm.
Provenance: Collection of Sir Francis Aglen (安格聯 1869 – 1932), thence by descent to the present owner.
脇差 銘 相州住 国廣
Sir Francis Aglen was Inspector-General of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service from 1911 to 1927 and was honoured with the Third Class, First Rank of the Imperial Order of the Double Dragon. His work involved close official contact with Japan where his efforts were rewarded at the highest level. In 1916 he was awarded First Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure by Emperor Taisho, and in 1927 the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. The sword was reputed acquired around this time.
