MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES, ABORIGINAL & AUSTRALIAN INTEREST, late 19th century

An interesting group of (10) magic lantern slides depicting late 19th-century Australian scenes, each measuring 85 x 85mm, including three hand-tinted of Aboriginal subjects, two of which were taken by Nicholas John Caire (1937-1918). Individual details and subjects are as follows:

  1. Hand-tinted slide. Original label: "21. Male native of Lake Tyres, Victoria" - A male indigenous man in European clothing posing with a boomerang and hunting spear in front of a mia-mia at Lake Tyers Reserve in east Gippsland, c.1900. Original photograph by Nicholas John Caire.
  2. Hand-tinted slide. Original label: "20. Group of Natives, Victoria" - An exterior portrait of an indigenous group in European clothing at Lake Tyers Mission, far eastern Victoria, 1866. Original photograph by Nichoals Caire, published in his 1886 portfolio of Gippsland views.
  3. Hand-tinted slide. Original label: "37. Group of Natives on the Murray" - An exterior portrait of a group of indigenous women, possibly made by Nicholas John Caire at the Maloga Mission, c.1880s.
  4. Slide depicting a view of a vineyard, with handwritten caption "A Victorian Vineyard".
  5. Slide depicting a group of unidentified indigenous men, women, and children, with illegible printed text along bottom margin. (small crack to bottom right corner, with detached piece).
  6. Slide depicting Princes Bridge, Melbourne, with printed caption label (crack running down center of slide, no loss).
  7. Slide depicting the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide, with handwritten caption and WH Cooper maker label.
  8. Slide depicting Elder Park, Adelaide, with handwritten caption and WH Cooper maker label.
  9. Slide depicting an unidentified forest scene, with Kerry & Co., Sydney maker label.
  10. Slide depicting an unidentified farm scene, with Kerry & Co., Sydney maker label.
