A VERY RARE CHINESE CLOISONNÉ 'LOTUS' KUNDIKA

Ming Dynasty or later

明或後期 掐絲琺瑯纏枝蓮紋奔巴瓶

The globular body finely decorated with polychrome lotus flowers borne from curling leafy stems between bands of petal lappets, set with an upward-angled spout decorated with a protruding flaming pearl motif and leafy stems, terminating in a hinged cover surmounted with a gilt-bronze bud finial over petal lappets, a slender tapering neck issuing from a bulbous knop, surmounted by a gilt-bronze finial cast as unfurling petals, all raised on a stepped base formed of various bands of lappets and classic scroll in polychrome enamels and gilt-bronze, all on a rich turquoise ground, the base inscribed with a viśvavajra motif,

Compare a very similar kundika in the collection of the British Museum, donated by Sir Harry Garner, dated to the Xuande period with later details added in the 18th century, of a slightly larger size, museum no. 1977,0718.1, and illustrated by Sir Harry Garner in 'Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné Enamel', London, 1962, pl. 16.

A related vessel is housed in the collection of the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, and is illustrated by Chen Hsia-Sheng in 'Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties', National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1999, pl. 60.

A comparable kundika was sold at Christie's New York, 29th March 2006, lot 294, and another at Christie's Paris, 13th June 2007, lot 29.
