Note: The egg-yellow, green and aubergine-coloured splashes that decorate this dish are a homage to earlier sancai (‘three-colour’) wares of the Tang Dynasty (617-908 A.D), where they arguably reached their zenith. During the rule of the Kangxi emperor (r.1661-1722) there was much innovation in the fields of ceramic production and decoration, with new porcelain works created that paid homage to the illustrious dynasties of China’s past.

c.f. A very similar, but smaller, 'egg and spinach' bowl, bearing a four-character Chenghua mark, was offered at Bonhams Edinburgh, 15th November 2018, lot 321. Another very similar pair of bowls were offered at Bonhams Knightsbridge, 9th May 2016, lot 52, and another pair at Christie's New York, 27th March 2018, lot 77.

A bowl with similar decoration is illustrated by the Nanjing Museum in 'Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty', Shanghai, 2003, p. 109.

Compare a similarly-sized and decorated bowl, but potted instead with an everted rim, from the collection of Robert and Jean-Pierre Rousset, offered at Bonhams Paris, 25th October 2022, lot 97. A larger bowl from the Jie Rui Tang Collection, bearing a six-character Kangxi mark and being of the period, was offered at Sotheby's New York, 20th March 2018, lot 356. The latter is compared to a bowl housed in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, also dated to the Kangxi period.

A bowl of bearing sancai decoration, with a Kangxi mark and being of the period, is illustrated in 'Selected Porcelain of the Flourishing Qing Dynasty at the Palace Museum', Hong Kong, 1994, no.78. See also a similar 'egg and spinach'-glazed deep bowl, Kangxi period, which was sold at Bonhams London, 6th November 2014, lot 44.
