Indian colonial interest – An Edwardian sterling silver racing trophy bowl, Sheffield 1907 by Walker and Hall

Of compressed circular form upon a domed pedestal foot with a die-stamped rim of C scrolls, rocaille, and foliage. They body with embossed decoration of three cartouches, each flanked by a cast and applied winged mermaid and merman, and in base a male mask, otherwise with foliate decoration and S scrolls, interspersed by three cast and applied lioness’s head. The rim section with embossed baskets of fruit interspersed with floral bouquets. One cartouche engraved “Achievement”, the other two engraved with presentation inscription reading “Races won Karachi Spring Meeting Trail Plate 4 Fur 11st (Owner) 54 2/5 sec 23 April 1907, Chizri Plate 6 fur 11st (owner) 126 1/5 sec 25 April 1907, Quetta Spring Meeting, Kolwal Handicap (dead heat) 6 fur 10 st 6 (Capt Winter) 1.24 4/5 sec 23 May 1907” and also “Races won Quetta Spring Meeting English Stakes 4 fur 11 st 7 (owner) 53 1/5 sec 27 May 1907, Karachi Hunt Races Malir Handicap 4 fur 11 st 4 (owner) 53 1/5 sec 21 March 1908, Quetta Spring Meeting Baleli Plate 5 Fur 11st 2 (Col O’Donnell) 19 4/5 sec 19 May 1908.” The footrim with chased demi-lunettes. Gilt interior. Fully marked to the rim.
