Note: Dudley Holland was born in Surrey in 1915 and studied at the Chelsea School of Art. Holland was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art, but opted not to continue his artistic studies, opting instead to practice and teach others. He was appointed the Head of York Art school at just 34, demonstrating his passion for his subject and interest in sharing it with others. In 1950 his works were exhibited at York Art Gallery in an exhibition titled "Two Modern Artists" where alongside sculptor Austin Wright, Holland captivated audiences with his innovative modern linocuts and paintings which explored expression of form and colour rather than merely capturing a likeness.
Printmaking in Britain saw a resurgence in the 20th century, where linocuts became a key tool in the evolving art landscape. The material itself is a modern invention- first conceived as a flooring material in the 1860s, it was quickly adopted by artists as an affordable medium in the production of prints. Unlike the specialist tools required for engraving woodblocks and copper plates, linoleum could be manipulated using simple knives and chisels, making linocuts an accessible method of printmaking. Claude Flight, a lecturer at The Grosvenor School established in 1925, and key figure in British printmaking, saw linocuts as a democratic means for expression. This pioneering school taught students to embrace colour, representation, shape and mood through linoleum creating vibrant and joy-filled images. The Grosvenor School, housed in Pimlico was intrinsically linked to the tension of modern inner-city life and was influenced by avant-garde movements such as Vorticism and Futurism. In contrast, whilst Dudley Holland embraced the pioneering style of the Grosvenor school, and undoubtedly interacted with its figures during his time at Chelsea, his more rural upbringing and later move to historic York undoubtedly influenced his subject matter. Instead of the bustling scenes of city life he illustrated twisted roots, woodland scenes, animals and abstract naturalistic forms. Elements of Vorticism can be seen in his depiction of water and use of abstract pattern. Holland favoured linocut and woodcut techniques where he created complex multi-layer images with great texture and depth of colour.
Holland also exhibited at the Arts Council Cambridge, the Royal Academy and the Redfern Gallery- which hosted the first exhibition of the Grosvenor School artists. A skilled print maker he was well respected in his field and there are clear stylistic links between Holland and his early 20th Century contemporaries. The artist's life was tragically cut short in a motorbike accident in 1957, and a retrospective of his work was shown in Guildford.

BID IN PERSON
We are thrilled to invite you to our Saleroom to bid in person. To bid in person at auction, please register in advance for a bidding paddle by filling out and submitting a registration form at our reception on the day of the sale. When registering in person we require photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.
TELEPHONE BIDDING
Telephone bidding is easy and simple: one of our dedicated client services representatives will work with you as the auction happens, to relay the bidding activity in the room on the day and place bids on your behalf.
To qualify for the service, all lots in a specialist themed sale, need to be worth at least £200 in the lower end of estimation & for our Interiors, Homes & Antiques monthly sales at least £100 (lower end of estimation)
Please email regarding the auction and lots you are interested in. The Bids Department will then register your bids or answer any questions you may have. All telephone bid requests should be organised at least 12 hours before the start time of any auction. On the day of the auction, we will telephone you approximately five lots before your lot is announced. Our client services representative will relay the bidding activity in the room and place bids as you wish.
ABSENTEE BIDS
Can’t place your bid in person or in real time for a specific auction? You can submit an Absentee bid and we will bid on your behalf at the lowest possible price up to your set limit.
Please email regarding the auction and lots you are interested in, at least 12 hours before the auction. From there, we will bid on your behalf at the lowest possible price up to your set limit.

BEFORE THE SALE
REGISTER TO BID
If you are interested in bidding by telephone bid or absentee bid, you will need to register by completing a Registration Form and emailing it to our Bids Department at bids@chiswickauctions.co.uk. You will be required to send two forms of photo I.D. and proof of address within the last 3 months.
New clients are asked to register at least 24 hours in advance of a sale.
AFTER THE SALE
PAYMENT
If you are the successful bidder you will be emailed an invoice setting out hammer price plus Buyer’s Premium and all other applicable charges.
All purchased Lots must be paid for on the day of the auction. Successful Absentee Bids may be paid for the day after the auction.
Payment is accepted by debit card, credit card (Visa or MasterCard only), bank transfer or cash (subject to conditions). We do not accept cheques. Payment can be made on our website by clicking here. At this current time we cannot offer payment in person.
Once all amounts owed are received by Chiswick Auctions in cleared funds, title will pass to the buyer.
CHARGES
BUYERS PREMIUM
A Buyer’s Premium of 26% on the hammer price plus VAT on that commission is charged on the first £500,000 and 12% plus VAT on the balance thereafter.
A Buyer’s Premium of 21% plus VAT is charged on Wine & Spirits Lots.
The standard rate of VAT is charged on the premium.

ONLINE BIDDING SURCHARGE
Chiswick Live continues to be the most affordable online bidding platform with no additional surcharge.
Customers bidding through the third-party auction platform the-saleroom.com are liable for a 4.95% surcharge on the hammer price, plus VAT. This is in addition to the Buyer’s Premium.
Customers bidding through the third-party auction platforms Invaluable.com or Liveauctioneers.com or Artsy.net are liable for a 5% surcharge on the hammer price, plus VAT. This is in addition to the Buyer’s Premium.
ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT (DROIT DE SUITE)
Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or their estate every time the artist’s work is sold at auction or by an art market professional during the artist’s lifetime and for a period of up to 70 years following the artist’s death.
Royalties are calculated on a cumulative sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding Buyer’s Premium and are outlined in our Terms & Conditions.
COLLECTIONS
We continue to offer a Click and Collect service for all purchased lots. The process is quick and easy and can be done personally or via your chosen courier. The service will be contactless, adhering to strict social distancing at our Chiswick Saleroom. To book a click and collect appointment or to provide authorisation for your chosen courier/representative to collect your goods, please email collections@chiswickauctions.co.uk quoting your invoice number. Our Collections Team will provide you with a designated collection slot and the required paperwork.
SHIPPING
Our in-house shipping department can ship items that fit into boxes or envelopes no more than 30cm big or weigh more than 1kg. Please email shipping@chiswickauctions.co.uk for a quote.

STORAGE
CA Ltd offers a discretionary 14 days free storage on purchased and unsold Lots from the date of the sale. Thereafter Lots not collected shall incur storage charges of:
- £5.00 per lot, per day or part thereof for smalls and pictures (defined as anything that can be handled by one person)
- £10.00 per lot, per day for furniture and other larger lots.
CA Ltd shall be entitled to retain said Lots until all sums due have been paid to CA Ltd. If any lot remains uncollected 21 days after the sale, storage charges shall thereafter be £10/£20 (smalls/larger items) per day and CA Ltd shall, in accordance with the Law, have the right to sell the purchased Lot to recover payment of storage charges outstanding. Any balance proceeds of sale received after payment of all sums outstanding and due to CA Ltd shall be held for the account of the Buyer.
