AN ORIENTALIST PORCELAIN MANTEL CLOCK WITH A RESTING TURK MADE FOR THE TURKISH MARKET
Possibly France, mid to late 19th century

Assembled from two parts, the main porcelain body designed in rococo style resting on scrolling feet, gilt, and encasing a twin train movement clock with outside countwheel and silk suspension striking on a bell (pendulum detached), with a white enamel dial incised with Roman numerals, the body surmounted by a porcelain figure of a young man in Turkish dress including a turban, resting with a hand to his face and his elbow on his knee, perched on a small rocky mound, two daggers tucked into his belt and a sword to his side, his clothing gilt and polychrome painted in a palette of blues, greens, pink, and brown, a typical example of Western 19th-century turquerie, 43.5cm x 25cm x 12.4cm.
