AN ORIENTALIST ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCK WITH SMOKING TURK MADE FOR THE TURKISH MARKET
France, mid to late 19th century
A typical example of turquerie mantel clock, the body fashioned in rococo-style with scrolling feet, encasing a twin train movement clock with outside countwheel and silk suspension striking on a bell (pendulum attached) marked 'A Paris', the front with an incised silver dial with Roman numerals, the base surmounted by a gilt bronze Turkish gentleman resting on a chaise longue smoking a chibouk pipe, dressed in typical Turkish attire with a multi-folded turban and a dagger tucked in his sash, the base stamped at the back in reverse 2479, 27cm x 17.5cm x 7.5cm.
