A GROUP OF OTTOMAN METAL THREAD-EMBROIDERED VELVET COSTUMES
Possibly Bursa and Ankara, Ottoman Turkey, early 20th century

Comprising a long anteri open robe of purple velvet, heavily worked in metallic threads couched on cardboard, and spangles with floral baskets at the base, and stylised flowering branches throughout, the sleeve edges, front, and hems with gold fringe, lined in off-white cotton, 137cm from the nape; a kaftan of deep red velvet, similarly worked; and another, in purple velvet; and a short jacket of bright pink satin silk, finely worked in metallic threads and spangles in a variety of techniques, with minor areas of pale blue satin highlights, with small buti, floral vases, insects, stellar motifs, all edged with scalloping border and metallic thread braiding, lined in pale orange cotton, 45cm from the nape.
