Iran, late 19th - early 20th century
Of rectangular form, made of two joined lengths of printed cotton, the ground of madder red with repeating rows of buti in alternating directions in blue, and white in reserve, the central lobed white cartouche printed in blue and red with alternating floral clusters, the elaborate border with floral niches and chevrons on the horizontal plain in indigo, white, red, yellow, and blue, the inner border with repeating calligraphic cartouches in sepia nasta’liq script with a half line of Persian poetry bestowing eternal blessings to the host in praise of his offerings of food, 312cm x 122cm.
