明 銅瑞獸活耳瓶一對

Each vase with a slender pear-shaped body raised atop a stepped foot, the shoulder set with a pair of horned mythical beast heads issuing large looping handles set with oval-shaped rings, the exterior cast with a band of archaistic motifs on a leiwen ground and the foot with cresting waves,

approx. 47cm high, approx. 7.05kg and 6.5kg

Note: These vases were possibly originally part of an altar set, see a pair of very similar, smaller vases in the collection of the British Museum, acc. no. 1991,1028.9.a-b. The pair of vases in the British Museum are grouped together with a tripod censer and a pair of candle holders.

See also an earlier example, dated to the 12th-14th century, offered at Christie's South Kensington, 19th July 2007, lot 139, and another dated to the Yuan-Ming Dynasty at Christie's Hong Kong, 6th December 2022, lot 3152. Another slightly smaller vase, dated to the Yuan/Ming Dynasty, was offered at Sotheby's New York, 30th September 2020, lot 1065.
