Jewish interest - An early 18th century German silver tankard, Hamburg circa 1720, by Johann Wilhelm Heumann (active 1700-32)

Of cylindrical form raised on three ball feet, the hinged gently domed lid raised by a ball finial. The C-scroll handle with a cartouche terminal. The front later engraved with quartered coat of arms reserved in foliate mantling. The lid later engraved with two crests; upon a mount, a squirrel sejant cracking a nut, between on the dexter side a trefoil slipped, and on the sinister a branch of hazel fructed extending to the dexter, and secondarily upon a mount a peacock regardant in tts pride, between two roses, leaved and slipped. The ball finial later engraved with initials HFW in flourished cursive script below a Baron’s coronet. Engraved with contemporeaous intials underneath J.P. in simple script. Marked with town mark and makers mark either side of handle.

The crest and arms are for Faudel and Phillips

For Sir George Faudel-Phillips (1840-1922) 1st Bt, who was the son of Sir Samuel Benjamin Phillips (1811-1889) and Rachel Faudel (1812-1880). are the quartered arms and crests of the Jewish families of FAUDEL and PHILLIPS, adopted by Royal Licence in 1895 by Sir George Faudel-Phillips (1840-1922), 1st Baronet, who was Lord Mayor of London in 1896. His parents were Sir Samuel Benjamin Phillips (1811-1889) by Rachel née Faudel (1812-1880). Born George Phillips he later adopted the family name Faudel-Phillips in recognition of inheritance from his maternal great-uncle, the brother of the father Henry Faudel (died 1863) of his mother Rachel Faudel.
