A James II sterling silver tankard, London 1688 by script D probably for Isaac Dighton (free. 7^th June 1672, d. 1707)

Of gently tapering cylindrical form with moulded rims, the hollow C scroll handle leading to a flat top lid raised by a sand cast twin corkscrew thumbpiece. The lid with a broad rim with shaped protruding front section, with incised concentric circles. The handle with early 18^th century engraved initials B*G over M. Fully marked to the right of the handle and to the front of the lid. The underside engraved with scratchweight 29 82.

Height – 18.5 cm / 7.25 inches

Weight – 930 grams / 29.9 ozt

This mark is particularly noted on chinoiserie engraved silver as part of a selection of plate between 1675-1696, Mitchell, D., Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London: their lives and their marks, Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2017, p. 265.

A tankard of 1694 with this mark was sold Christie’s 1946.
