A George I Britannia standard silver tobacco box, London 1717 by James Goodwin (reg. 27th March 1710)

Of oval form with a pull off lid. The lid engraved with Baroque scrolls and foliage, topped with a crest of a dolphin embowed, the lower section engraved W Havet. The underside engraved ‘W Havet Norwich’ in Roman script. The coat of arms later set with a Queen Anne medal for the Peace of Utrecht 1713, the reverse with Britannia holding olive branch, spear and shield, ships and farming scene beyond, COMPOSITIS. VENERANTVR. ARMIS. Fully marked to the base and the lid interior with a maker’s mark.

The crest is for Havet

William Havet, gentleman, died 14th Feb 1741, buried at Morningthorpe.

almost certainly the same William mentioned as the son of Johannis (John) Havet (1633 - 6th Feb 1724) merchant, in his will. John Havet married Ann one of the daughters of Martin Hastings of Hindringham on the 3rd November 1663. This seems to be he John Havet who was Parish Chaplain of St Giles Chuch, Norwich in 1709.

The arms of Havet; vert, on a fess between three angle hooks arg. three delises sab. are on a mural monument on the north side of the altar at The Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, Holt, Norfolk.
