AN ENGRAVED AND REPOUSSÉ GILT COPPER (TOMBAC) LIDDED JAR AND TRAY
Western Ottoman Provinces, mid to late 19th century
Comprising a lidded jar of compressed cylindrical shape, resting on a plain circular foot, with a dome-shaped lid with floral finial, the exterior enhanced with typical 19th-century Ottoman repoussé decoration including crescent moons and stars, lush vegetation, palmette leaves, and cusped cartouches filled with pairs of men dressed in a variety of styles (merchants, travellers, villagers and clergymen), 16.5cm high; and a circular tray with everted and raised rim in the shape of flower petals, in the centre a circular medallion engraved with the tughra of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918), 22cm diam.
