Important letter from British Visitor to his mother. British Visitor is staying at Yamato Hotel, Mukden. ‘On account of the Plague, the regular trains to Peking have been stopped. There is at present 7 days quarantine at Shanghai but as there is only room for a limited number at the Quarantine Hotel, we cannot all go’.

‘In the outlining villages, when a man dies they squirt carbolic over the body, they lift it up and put it in a coffin and squirt more carbolic over it and take it off and bury it at once; they say that very few of the coolies who do this get the disease’.

‘The Japs are ready to take over the whole of this Country at any moment. They have 95,000 troops between here and Port Arthur and a great many all along the line under pretence of looking after it’
