A pair of George III sterling silver candlesticks, Sheffield 1781/82 by John Winter & Co, retailed by Robert Jones of London

Each with square form bases with stepped beaded edge and palmette border, rising to a tapering cylindrical stem enwrapped with embossed spiralling ribbons of acanthus leaves against a textured ground. The urn shaped capitals with embossed acanthus leaves and beading, each with removable circular sconces with die-rolled acanthus leaf borders. Each engraved with a crest of a lion’s head erased to the base. Filled with wooden undersides. One marked for 1781 by John Winter and Co, the other marked for 1782 by Robert Jones. (2)
