A rare George II provincial small footed waiter or tazza, Exeter 1731 by Joseph Collier of Plymouth

Of circular form with a gentle cavetto edge and moulded rim, plain field. Upon a spreading trumpet foot. Fully marked only to the field edge.

Diameter – 13.5 cm / 5.3 inches

Height – 4.1 cm / 4.65 inches

Weight – 122 grams / 3.92 ozt

Joseph Collier (1692-1764) was a quaker and made a freeman in 1714, registering his first mark at Exeter on 11 Feb 1714 and a sterling standard on the 19 Feb 1721. The list of items between 1714-60 by Collier does not record another or this tazza or salver, Rendle, R. S., (1986), The Goldsmiths and Silversmith of Plymouth, Devon circa 1600 to 1800.

Another Plymouth footed waiter of Exeter 1728 by Samuel Blachford, was sold Woolley and Wallis, 27 April 2016, lot 499 (£1900 hammer).
