The dish potted with shallow rounded sides supported by a short foot, painted to the interior in polychrome enamels to depict a stylised lotus flower, the exterior with a single thin red band, all over a cream-coloured slip under a clear glaze,

Note: Painted polychrome enamels were one of the most important innovations achieved by the Cizhou kilns. Enamel overglaze painting is one of the most celebrated traditions of the Ming and Qing dynasties, yet can be traced back to the Cizhou kilns as early as the Song dynasty. Designs in red, yellow, and green enamels are painted on glazed and pre-fired plain white pieces which are then fired at a lower temperature. The majority of these early polychrome vessels were small, shallow bowls and dishes like the present lot.
