A CHINESE EN GRISAILLE ‘EUROPEAN SUBJECT’ PUNCH BOWL. Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period. Decorated in overglaze iron-red, brown enamels and gilt with floral sprays between three roundels containing en grisaille scenes: the first depicting moments after the Christ’s crucifixion, His body carried towards a grave, the second a young courtesan arriving in her client’s home, the third a young man entering a bedroom to discover his lover’s infidelity, the interior with a flower roundel and gilt spearhead band to the rim, 28.5cm diameter. 清乾隆   墨彩加樊紅繪人物故事圖紋潘翠盌 This bowl is exceptionally rare in its decoration juxtaposing as it does a religious scene with two erotic scenes.
