A Victorian sterling silver and enamel mounted glass ecclesiastical flagon or ewer, London 1869 by Charles Hart (reg. 3^rd August 1857) of Hart, Son, Peard and Co

The clear glass baluster body with a conical foot with a moulded edge, he neck mount with a straight section handle with stylised leafy terminal, and inner scroll junction, all leading to a hinged domed lid raised by a trefoil form thumbpiece. The lid surmounted by a Celtic cross finial with opaque cerulean blue enamel. The neck mount with engraved simple geometric bands. The lid with a gilt interior. Fully marked underneath, maker’s mark CH, the neck mount and lid part-marked.

Hart was amalgamated in 1866/67 with Peard and Jackson, manufacturers of medieval art metal works, etc. of 159 Holborn. Exhibited at international exhibitions in London 1851, 1862, and 1867, Dublin 1853 and 1865 and Paris 1855 and 1867. At the 1862 London exhibition they exhibited ecclesiastical and domestic metalwork, iron, brass, and silver. They are thought to be the manufacturers of a gilt brass dish with silver and niello decoration of 1875 designed by William Burgess (1827-1881). (Culme, Vol One, P. 217-218).
