A MEISSEN BEAKER AND A COVER, 19th Century, of squat baluster form with a generous flared neck, painted to both sides with harbour scenes depicting merchants at work with ships in the distance, within elaborate gilt cartouches embellished with iron-red and purple scrollwork, the base with eight alternating puce and iron-red vignettes depicting Kauffahrtei scenes reserved against a burnished gold ground, the rim with a gilt scrollwork border, the octagonal cover similarly decorated, 17.7cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue and impressed numerals to the beaker (2) PROVENANCE: Private German collection. FOOTNOTES: For an 18th Century beaker and cover of similar form and similarly decorated with harbour scenes, but on a turquoise ground, and similar alternating monochrome vignettes to the base, see Ulrich Pietsch, 'Early Meissen Porcelain' (2011), p.378, cat.434.
