A LARGE BURMESE RED AND BLACK LACQUER 'ELEPHANTS' BOX AND COVER

19th/20th Century

The lidded box of rectangular thitta form, the cover decorated using the yun technique in red, yellow and black with a scene depicting confronting elephants and riders outside the city walls, all within a border dotted with flowerheads issuing from undulating leafy stems and inset with inscribed panels, the sides decorated with running figures alternating with elephants and leafy plants, the base inscribed and decorated with leafy fronds, the interior lacquered red,
