A BURMESE LACQUER 'MARRIAGE GIFT' BOX

Pegu, early 20th Century, dated 1932

Of rectangular form atop four short feet, the cover inscribed with a message detailing the family names of a Pegu education officer and the year '1932' in Burmese, all on a black lacquer ground, the hinged lid opening to reveal a red lacquered interior, the base and reverse of the lid signed,

23cm long, 8.3cm high

Previously in the collection of a British missionary family residing in Burma in the 1920s-30s;

Collection of Prospect Burma, UK.

The inscription likely relates to the shinbyu ceremony, a novitiate ceremony in the tradition of Theravada Buddhism, referring to the celebrations marking the sāmaṇera (novitiate) monastic ordination of a boy under the age of 20.
