A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE ‘TOBACCO LEAF’ MEAT DISH. Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period. The oval body with lobed rim decorated with large meaty leaves and flower heads in colourful enamels and gilt, the reverse with floral sprays, an old paper label to the reverse reading Old Famile Rose dish porcelen [sic] of early oriental (…) (…) (…) to the late Earl of Bristol who was Bishop of Derry 1770 35 x 28cm. Provenance: From the collection of Earl of Bristol, Bishop of Derry. Frederick Augustus Hervey was the 4th Earl of Bristol (1730-1803), the son of John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey (1696-1743) and Mary Lepple (C.1700-1768), the grandson on John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (1665-1751). Elected Bishop of Cloyne in 1767 and translated to the see of Derry in 1768, Hervey served as Lord Bishop of Derry until his death in 1803. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1782, and in the following year received the Freedom of the City of Dublin as well as of Derry.
