A KASHMIRI LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ CALLIGRAPHER'S TOOLS AND PEN CASE
Kashmir, Northern India, mid to late 18th century
Of typical elongated octagonal shape, resting on a flat base, with a convex hinged lid, polychrome-painted, gilt and lacquered, the decoration on the exterior in line with Kashmiri lacquer production featuring wild flower bouquets of roses, tulips, poppies, carnations, hyacinths and daisies, all highlighted in gold and set against a black ground, several concentric bands of fretwork and vegetal motifs on the edges, the base with cusped cartouches filled with gilt foliage, arabesques and rosette stems, the brightly-coloured interior with two layers of removable compartments to host calligrapher's tools, repeating floral stems as main decorative motif, the metal hinges and lock possibly a later addition, 6.5cm x 31.5cm x 10.5cm.
