Three hundred of these bowls were commissioned by Sir Colin Southgate for the demerger of Thorn EMI group, with an event held at the Tate. The design is based on an inverted version of the symbol of the Thorn EMI, the commission being gained through Tim Guy, a designer for Thorn. The commission was initially for 200 but was increased to 300 as such these bowls were then assayed in Sheffield as opposed to London where Hall usually has his work assayed. The original is maintained by the silversmith. Hall trained at Hornsey college of art 1963-65 and then the Royal College of Art 1965-68 establishing his workshop in Cornwall in 1972.
