A late 19th century American silver covered twin handled sugar bowl, Baltimore, Maryland circa 1880 by August Jacobi and Co
Of cylindrical form with a domed pull off lid surmounted by a detachable finial formed as a gourd with leafy base. The twin handles formed as two interlaced reeded straps with bifurcated junctions with fruiting vine. The body with embossed decoration in the ‘Maryland’ style of chinoiserie style houses and other buildings, populated with figures including a man in a gondola boat, and palm trees. All reserved with foliate scrolls, rocaille scrolls and flowerheads against a matted ground, a vacant shield shape cartouche to either side. The top and the lid similarly reserved. Marked underneath A. JACOBI & CO, STERLING (used 1879-90).
