A LARGE JAPANESE EMBROIDERED 'COCKERELS' WALL HANGING

Meiji period, circa 1900

Worked to depict two white cockerels fighting in a garden among chrysanthemum, iris and peony blossoms, a landscape of distant mountains with a pagoda unrolling in the background, a four-character mark to the lower right embroidered within a censer-shaped panel reading Ma Ā Shuin, the brocade border woven with stylised blossoms, backed with a cotton textile printed with dragons and phoenix birds among clouds

225cm high, 178cm long

A very similar, unsigned textile panel was sold at Bonhams, London. 17th May 2018, lot 326.
