The son of Arnaud Julien Pallière (1784-1862) who accompanied Princess Leopoldine to Brazil in 1817, Jean Leon was born in Rio and studied in Paris and Rio de Janeiro, travelling to Argentina for the first time in 1848. He returned to study in Rome before travelling extensively in South America after 1855. His famous Album Pallière. Escenas Americanas, including fifty-two lithographs, was published in Buenos Aires in 1864-5. For his travels in Argentina see M.
