A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE REVERSE-DECORATED 'HUNDRED CRANE' JAR. Ming Dynasty, six character Wanli mark and of the period. The ovoid body painted with cranes in flight against a ground of dense stylised clouds, with bands of dentils to the shoulder and rim and a continuous floral band to the neck, 39.5cm H. Provenance: Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, inv no PB128. 明萬曆   青花留白雲鶴紋罐,青花「大明萬曆年製」楷書款 來源:徐展堂中國藝術館藏標。 The decoration on this vase is a feat of artistic and technical virtuosity with the reverse decorated tessellating pattern hand painted across a surface curved across three planes. The crane, the insignia of the first rank on civil rank badges, is also a symbol of longevity.
