Note: 'On The Sands' is a lithograph produced after the 1953 Oil painting of the same title, currently held in a Private Collection. L.S. Lowry took great inspiration from the coast, he spent his childhood holidays on the Fylde coast and Rhyl, and went on to frequent the beaches of Sunderland, Maryport and Deal. He painted numerous exact beaches though the location of 'On the Sands' is unknown. This image marks a turning point in Lowry's career as he moved away from crowded city scenes toward painting more intimate scenes and figural studies. The figures in this print are light-hearted beach goers and can be seen playing cricket, walking dogs and running along the shore, this lies in contrast to many of Lowry's mill scenes which feel heavy with smog and downtrodden factory workers.
