A CHINESE EN GRISAILLE 'LE PECHEUR' DISH

Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, circa 1750

清乾隆 約1750年 墨彩釣魚圖紋盤

Decorated en grisaille to the centre with a scene depicting a lone fisherman standing barefoot on a riverbank, holding out a fishing rod beside two large fishing baskets as a pair of geese fly overhead through the cloudy sky, all enclosed within a border decorated with four landscape vignettes painted in gilt and iron-red, interspersed with gilt florettes on a cell-pattern ground,

Note: The scene is copied from a print by C.J. Visscher de Jonge, a Dutch engraver, who based his design on a drawing by Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651). For an example see D. S. Lunsingh Scheurleer, 'Chinese Export Porcelain – Chine de Commande', London, 1974, fig. 207, for an illustration of this print, together with two plates with this design as figs. 206 and 298.

A comparable dish, from the Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann collection, was sold at Christie’s, 10th April 2002, lot 425. Another dish from the Jean-Louis Binder Collection was sold at Christie's London, The J. Louis Binder Collection of Chinese Export Art, London, 17th June 2003, lot 51.

A very similar dish is in the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels, exhibited Hong Kong, 1989/90, Catalogue no.44.
