A PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE-ROSE ARMORIAL SMALL BOWLS

Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, circa 1790

清乾隆 約1790年 外銷粉彩紋章小盌一對

Potted with curved sides rising from a short, straight foot, each painted to the exterior with the Mercer of Perth coat of arms between two mottos, the upper one reading 'The.Gi.Pc.Poul' (sic), the lower reading 'Crux.cm.Risti.Nostra.Corona', each interior decorated in underglaze-blue with a band of diaper pattern,

8.2cm diameter

Note: The arms are those of Mercer of Perth. The family are descended from John Mercer, Provost of Perth who sat on the General Council of Scotland and was Ambassador to both England and France between 1364 and 1367. The service was probably made for his descendant William who was ADC to Warren Hastings in 1784, and married Barbara, sister to Sir Robert Forbes of Hawthornden, in 1788.
