A mid-20^th century Sudanese silver basket, Omdurman dated 1952

Of octagonal form with lobed sides,filigree sided, raised upon four filigree rosette feet, the field chased in Arabic reading “Gift from Abu Hindi Alkindy-Hassan Alob – Alreiad to Mr Graham to remember – 2 March 1952”, all edged with flat chased decoration of stylised scroll forms. A twisted swing handle.

Length – 22 cm / 8.6 inches

Weight – 460 grams / 14.79 ozt

Alreiad is a region in Khartoum, this basket dates shortly before independence in 1955.
