Horst P. Horst (1906-1999)

WHITE SLEEVE, 1936. Silver gelatin print, printed later, image/sheet size 350 x 275mm, signed by the photographer in pencil with photographer's copyright stamp (2) on verso.

Published in British Vogue in 1936, Horst's striking fashion study 'White Sleeve' features Doris Zelensky modelling a suit Robert Piguet and hat by Suzanne Talbot. Horst began his career at Vogue in 1931, after serving as an assistant for well-established fashion photographer George Hoyningen-Huene. By 1935, Horst was acting as a principal photographer for Vogue in Paris and New York. Horst's masterful handling of light is reflected in the way his images "emphasise the key features of an outfit...So precise was Horst's approach that the lighting for a single image could take three days to perfect." -- Selling Dreams: 100 Years of Fashion Photography, the Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition wall text, 2014.
