A SET OF FIFTY-ONE WILLIAM DE MORGAN SQUARE TURQUOISE-GLAZED TILES, circa 1880-85, in Persian taste, each covered in a rich turquoise-blue glaze,each tile 7.7 x 7.7cm, various raised letters above 'No 12 T' to the reverse; together with TWO PERCY HARLAND FISHER TILES, both painted with a spray of stylised flowers, one in blue and one in polychrome, 12.7 x 12.7cm, raises 'HARLAND FISHER' marks to the reverse, with accompanying letter of provenance (53) PROVENANCE: Acquired by Harley Fisher, probably directly from De Morgan, and then passed to his son Percy Harland Fisher. They passed by descent to Adrian Fisher, and were purchased privately from his wife Daphne by the present owner in 2016. FOOTNOTES: In 1882 De Morgan was commissioned to install Frederic Leighton's collection of ancient Middle Eastern tiles in the Arab Hall in Leighton House. He repaired broken tiles, made replacements for missing pieces and designed the decorative scheme, taking him over two years to complete. Turquoise tiles of very similar design to those in the present lot can be found adorning the walls of the staircase of Leighton House Museum. Harley Fisher, who originally acquired these tiles, was a close friend of De Morgan.
