A QAJAR GOLD-DAMASCENED STEEL EWER AND BASIN
Qajar Iran, mid to late 19th century
Comprising a steel ewer of pyriform shape, resting on a splayed circular foot, rising to a tall, tapering, ringed neck, the dome-shaped lid surmounted by a faceted arrow head-like finial, with a sinuous handle with a stylised dragon head terminal and a tall upward-turned spout on the sides, the body showcasing two large cusped medallions engraved with a dense floral triumph of roses and foliage, and inlaid in gold with a central star cartouche filled with arabesque pattern, the rest of the ewer enhanced with gold-damascened geometric patterns and vegetal meanders, 42.3cm high; and a similarly decorated steel basin, with a gently compressed globular body and wide, everted rim enhanced with gold-inlaid cusped medallions filled with rose bouquets laid out in a radiating pattern against a dense floral background, 26cm diam. and 12cm high.
