The style and overall type of the painting point to its likely execution during the 16th century. The work can be compared to treatments of the subject by the Florentine and Venetian schools, notibly Giuseppe Porta (1520–1575), also known as Giuseppe Salviati, a mannerist painter and draughtsman. He was born in Salviati, near Florence. Porta was a pupil of Francesco de' Rossi (Il Salviati), whose name he subsequently adopted. He was influenced by the styles of Michelangelo and Andrea del Sarto.
