***“This reliance on impressions gave the volumes of the religious series - seven in all, published in 1902 and 1903 - a unity and pointedness that the earlier series on poverty and industry lacked. For the first time, Booth's evaluations were organically related to the descriptive data instead of being superimposed upon them. The two sides of Booth--the inquisitive investigator and the cautious businessman - had finally been reconciled.” (Fried and Elman, Charles Booth’s London, 1969, introduction).
