ATTRIBUTED TO CONSTANT TROYON (FRENCH 1810-1865)
The Lock
oil on canvas
76 x 63.5 cm

The style and overall type of the painting point to its likely execution during the mid 19th century. The work can be compared on stylistic and compositional grounds to treatments of the subject by Constant Troyon (1810 - 1865) notibly The Woodcutters, late 1840s (Royal Academy, London). A comparison with the present work reveals a similar spirit and vigour to the brushwork, a comparable treatment of light, and a similar characterisation of the figures, notably in the definition of their faces.

Estimated at £1,500 - £2,500
